Facebook has updated its iOS app today. The new update brings user-to-user free calls in the US and Canada. This feature was made available in the Facebook Messenger app a month ago and has now been provided in the iOS app as well.
This feature means that millions of people can now call each other over wi-fi or cellular data plans if they have installed updated Facebook iOS app. In order to make the free call, open a chat with the person, tap “i” button and then tap the Free Call option.
Facebook iOS app is for both iphone and iPad but so far the free calling option is not available in iPad. It may also be noted that the free calling feature is only available in the US and Canada though it is expected that other countries will also get this feature soon. With Facebook getting the free calling option, the one reason for using Viber, Skype and Vonage has been addressed by Facebook.
Not everyone likes Facebook but the millions of installs of Facebook means that the feature may get huge adoption by users.
