The online microblogging and social networking website, Twitter is on the process of developing its own mobile music app according to relevant sources. This app would allow users to share and play songs on their Apple Inc. devices by streaming in music from the audio sharing service provided by the Berlin based SoundCloud Ltd.
The company had acquired We Are Hunted, a digital media startup as a part of its drive towards music. Twitter had launched a video application in January and is going past 140 characters of messaging while competing with its rivals so as to make users spent more time on the website. Addition of music will act as a means for the record companies to promote latest tracks by using the social networking attribute of Twitter.
Internet users are relying more on social networking sites nowadays to locate new tracks as streaming programs like Rdio Inc. and Spotify Ltd. allow its users to share playlists and songs via Facebook. The leading social network had updated its own news feed last week so as to make it simpler to find music.
SoundCloud makes it possible for users to avail songs from music labels and artists. Hence, users can not only listen but also make notations on the songs. The partnership will allow the users of Twitter to share these tracks using their mobiles.
Executives from two of the leading music labels first came to know today about Twitter’s plans when the music app development was reported by CNET.
